Have you ever tried this amazing fruit?

Whenever I see guava in the markets, I know it is a good season and it’s time to eat fresh and healthy!

I have such a beautiful memory with guava. When I was a kid, we had the biggest garden in the village. We had tons of mangoes, star fruits, rose apples, pomelon, pomegranates and guava in the garden. I loved the way my garden changed every season and provided us different fresh fruits now and then. Guava trees were something we kids cherished the most. It usually had fruit year round. My dad would wrap the fruits with paper so neatly that looked almost like the trees gave the paper fruits. But when we picked these fruits and opened the wraps, there would be perfect round and smooth beautiful juicy guavas. They was always our after school fruits.

When I was in college, my friend from Iran told me she was so excited about guava and had never tried it before. I felt so funny and blessed at the same time that I was so lucky to have guava trees next to my bedroom window then.

Guava is considered to be superrich in fiber and vitamin c. It also has high value of antioxidant pigments.

The fruits can be eaten raw or ripe. I love when it is half-ripen. In Thailand and India, we like to add a little bit of chili, sugar and salt mixture in the guava to give the pungent taste.

So look out in your market, if you see this superfruit! Try it and let me know if you like it 🙂

  • Guavas are very common in South Africa, and guava juice is the best thing to make ice lollies out of! YUM!

  • mmmmmmm. We don’t have guava trees here but I can buy them frozen at our Asian market. I love the idea of chili and salt and will try it.

  • I don’t think I’ve seen guava’s here in the Netherlands. Maybe in specialist supermarkets they’ll have it.

    So, what do you eat? Can you eat the skin? And the middle bit with the seeds?

      Yes, eat them just like apple. Some people avoid eating seeds… but it’s think the middle part is so yummy. You can peeled skin out, but it’s healthy and delicious to eat with skin, too.

  • I love guavas. We lived in South Africa until I was five, and I still remember them. Whenever I taste them, I’m transported right back there.

  • Tes, do you have any tips on how to choose guava in a supermarket? I never dare to buy them because I don’t know how to tell whether they are good ones or not. I love the story about your dad wrapping the fruits up on the tree – was this to protect them from insects or to help them ripen? Thanks for another lovely story!

      Hi Kristina, you are right! Wrapping the fruit helps protecting them from insects, birds and bats and helps protects their skin from harsh sunlight… so their skin smooth.
      To choose guava is actually to choose how you like to eat this fruit. Gauva can be eaten when it is green and crushy, when it’s half-ripe or fully ripe. We love when it is fresh and green to almost half-ripe. They should have crunchy skin and soft inside.
      I think you should try to buy those which looks fresh and light green with little bit of yellow. They should be perfectly tender and sweet. Try to buy different one and try how you like them.

    make it this way. salt, green chilli and indian corriander leaves, a tiny pinch of sugar,(u can add tamarind if u like), (even a little bit of mustard paste can be added)(some people like fully ripen dried red chillies to be half burnt and added in this paste )…..add all of them or you can deduct the bracketed ingredients, press them hard with your finger. you can try guava/cucumber/green organic tomato/(any tangy or sour fruit like green sour apples, green tender apricot, even green banana, green tender mangoes. Even some fresh green vegetables go so well with this paste, like indian gourd, beetroot, parsnip,raddish, chicory,etc.
