I don’t always stick to the plan, but there’s one thing I’m very punctual perpetually. Sunday morning, it’s time to visit our local fish market. At the local fish markets here, the fish trucks arrived every Sunday so it’s the perfect time to get fresh seafood. Morning is ideal because the fish is just unloaded from the containers to the colorful display. We usually buy a few types of seafood which can be frozen and used later in the coming week.
So this week, we bought some calamaris. They’re big and fresh, and I knew I could make many dishes from them. Sadik loves all kind of seafood, and when it comes to calamaris, he likes them battered and deep fried. Yaseen is not a fan of seafood at the moment, but we intend to slowly help him develop his palate so he could enjoy the exciting variety of food from the oceans.
Here is a simple Stir Fried Calamari with Chili and Garlic. It’s super easy to make, and believe it or not, the cooking part takes only about 3 minutes. I love the simplicity of this dish, and it absolutely shows off the sweet flavor of calamari. I love when the main character shines on the plate.
I went a little crazy with the amount of chilies used in this dish, but you can tone it down as per your liking. This Stir Fried Calamari with Chili and Garlic is best served with rice. It’s a warm and cozy comfort food, and you should have a really big bowl of it.
Stir Fried Calamari with Chili and Garlic
500 gm Calamari- Cleaned and Sliced (You can see how to do this in my video here.)
5 cloves garlic- chopped
4 fresh red chilies- chopped
Some green onion- sliced
2 tsp sugar
1 tbsp soy sauce
2 tsp fish sauce
Place a pan over high heat and add oil.
When the oil is hot, add garlic and chilies. Fry until aromatic.
Add calamari and give it a quick stir.
Season with soy sauce, sugar and fish sauce.
Cook further for a minute or two. Do not overcook otherwise the calamari will turn rubbery and tough.
Add green onion, stir and turn off the heat.
Serve hot with some rice.
